Refresher.

Hi there. Its been a while. Fair to say most would know the events that took place on the 11th. Earthquake, Tsunami, and the Nuclear threat. This has posponed my uploads even further from the busy few weeks prior to the event. Apologies.

I have been rather shaken up after being through the earthquake last year in New Zealand (M 7.1) and now this event in Japan (M 9.0). I have left the country as the threat of Nuclear meltdown is evident. That fact that there is contamination in the air, water, and vedgetables means the situation is not over. I was rather dissapointed to hear that my job had come to a close on the field as they closed up soon after the Nuclear problems.

Here are a slice of photo's from the last month. The last few a disappointing one as the crew had been building this course for the Alts Jam competition. I got the chance to hit it up the night before the earthquake testing the items to ensure correct construction.

Whats up is that it has been a hectic few days building more of the parks and creating a good vibe for the punters tomorrow! We have now got a surf ride park that is way sicker than in sounds with hips transfers and banks! so much fun~! The main park with night riding has a four jump line and a stack of rails and boxes! Its mint. The beginner line with 5 small tables and 5 jibs. Also the superpipe snowmaking continues as we are almost ready to shape. Saying all this i am almost ready to start filming and building up the shots for this season. She has been a fairly slow start up but kind of relaxed too. It's great to be back riding with the same percentage as working! I Love snowboarding! A few pics from the building and me in the cab of the cat with a sad expression on my face. You know how hard it is to take your own photo. It always comes out weird or sad looking. Gotta get more natural and relaxed! Film session tomorrow! Thanks for keeping me within your loop.

An epic day today started off by building some new features. Mine was the high box and we also did a cannon box. Good fun to ride. The digger team all had a big session on the park first thing after fresh shape. Few jumps couple of twirly birds, some jibbing. Weather was good and even scored a wee pow drop in the early arvo. Today was a good day!

Today was an epic journey outside the ski area to a mystical forest of fun times. Pow in abundance good crew and a first time ride of an unknown course. A few spots were tight and little hiking to be done but it was all worth it in the end. About an hour of riding to get to the bottom but only 20 minutes of which was hiking so all in all good riding.

Basicly a check out for later on when the snow gets a little deeper so its going to be sweet once things get going! Catch you all on the flipside.

So i have been driving the machines the last few weeks. In fact slowly my job is getting more into the driving seat rather than on the end of a spork. Its been great to learn the capabilities of the Bombardier Snow Cat. I have so far helped out with maintaining our mini park, course next to the park, and tonight helped out a bit in the superpipe.

I reallt appreciate the opportunity to work inn a machine and learn more skills so a big thanks to the Alts/Nekoma park crew. Below a shot of the warm up view of Inawashiro Lake. Nice sunrise today!

Today was a meeting for all the crew involved with Alts/Nekoma parks. what an epic crew here 17 strong! We had a good planing session for the winter and a great start to the plans for winter.

Its been a good week, with the second park on the go we are just waiting on some more snowfall to ensure bigger features and more features. I have been driving the machines a little with 2 days under my belt. Good fun, a lot of concentration, but most of all lucky to get the experience. Thanks to Cheke, Take, and Yuji for helping me out. (Photo below of the second park under way).

The crew is working well and we are all in design mode. I have been away shredding powder on our other side of the mountain at Nekoma. It was good times and pow was scored.

Went on a rail hunt today, plus some shoping for food and gumboots. My roommate/work mate Nabe san hooked up his wagon so that we could get the job done. Can't show the spots but will try get something out from it at some stage soon.

Alts 1 Park down 6 to go...

So i arrived at Alts Bandai resort on the 1st of January. The had received some good snow prior to my arrival and i scored a days shred before today. Today was meeting some of the crew and building the 1st park on the list of 7. The mini park was built up with 3 machines and a handful of ground crew. The team is tight and the focus is on point. All shredders and everyone loves to create. As usual my ability to remember every new Japanese name is still failing me. It will take me some time to remember all of them but i will get there. Stoked to be here and stoked with the crew! Syco Tamaneze!

Shredding!!

Today was the first day back shredding! So stoked! We rolled over to Kawaba resort in Gunma. After some good snowfalls in the last few days there was some pow around and the sun was shining. My first time to this enchanted little valley with obvious backcountry options i will be back again soon. Just waiting on the next storm then it will be on! They build up a we park too i hear. Run by Snowstyle they create a natural bowl like course and some jibs too! I rode with Camera man Shan McBride and his girl Aki cyan. My girlfriend Kana was there also. Good times! Hope to get back up soon! Peace!

Last night i went to check out the lights at Haruna San (Mt Haruna). Pretty cool. Freezing cold -10 or so with wind chill around -15. Was cool to see these things called Daruma (a hollow, round, Japanese doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen sect of Buddhism). There is also a folk story or ledgend if you will... That the lost their arms and legs for some reason... Lies they say but nun the less quite interesting. They are also know as a symbol of good luck and perseverance.

Rolled into Tokyo Today and Checked out Burton. We first went into the Burton Harajyuku shop where i met up with shop manager Tatsuji Nakashima. Checked out the gears and had a we chat. Later we caught up with some friends working at the Burton Office. Jimmy (Forum/Burton JPN) a guy who i had met through Hajime Hirano a couple of years back. It was good to see everything and the friends i haven't seen in a while. It will be even better once we all get on the mountain! I will post more shots from today in the AM. Later!

Just arrived back into the land of the rising sun. Well quite a change in temperature from the 25+ degrees in the NZ summer to the 2 degrees Tokyo cold. In saying this it is dope to be back here and the fun has just started. I met up with Forum Japan team rider Hajime Hirano. We shared a few brews and discussed the opportunity for the season. With such cold temps the snow is bound to start falling strong and the white room is just around the corner. Great to be back.

Its been some time since i was back on my bike. The problem being that after surgery i could not use my arm what so ever. Things recently have been on the up and i have been back on the bike helping out Chill passes with their summer program. They have taken some initiative into bike rentals around christchurch and helping push through cycling for locals creating a start on what to do for cycling in the city, what is good, and where and why to buy. I ride what is called a fixed gear cycle. Actually a track bike. This is a single speed gearing with no free rotating wheel. Thus giving you a more efficient ride and some fun for tricks. If you have not got any idea what i am talking about get onto a search engine and type in "Fixed Gear" and see what happens. I can almost guarantee you will want to get ahold of one. With one more week to go before i go to Japan time is running out to rip up the pavement. So with that, i am out there!

I'm in the Gym training up a storm lately. Just trying to get the old arm working properly again and build up the guns. ha ha. I can't believe how fast muscle eats away. Sure is a struggle and i would not suggest getting injuries. But we do get em... Just keep looking foward if you are as unfortunate as i was.

So here is the chance to update. Tell a story or whatever. I started this blog in order to get the terrain parks exposure whilst building them up. Giving you the reader or local the chance to see what had been happening during the week or month since you had last paid us with your visit. For others maybe just a chance to see what i was up to. Maybe not though ha ha. Anyways now i have decided to build on the efforts i put in this season and change the style of this blog just a little. Same stories and involvement of parks. I mean Shucks! I am still snowboarding. The plan is to include my travels to Japan where i work in parks also. To make this blog a little more universal and give some more angles to the posts. Maybe some mixed up stuff... maybe some different things... but by all means for the same reasons. I love to ride.

Slopestyle back to Winter Fury...

Yesterday was a day of intense slopestyle conditions. With slightly more severe than expected weather, the riders were put through a real challenge to see who could grip the title. After low visibility, fresh snow (20cm), and slow conditions we got through the lot.

1st open men and overall Ben Comber. 2nd Jan Hurka, and 3rd place Tj Josayama. Under 18 men in 1st place was Angus Gray. Open ski male was Joe Dole. Under 18 ski male in 1st place was Kenji Boekholt. The female contenders were in one devision due to numbers and were in the following order. 1st Georgina Allen, 2nd Jess Comber, and in 3rd place Fiona Brunton.

Considering the conditions and delays we have had trying to get the comp going these competitors have done exceptionally well. Congratulations and thank you to all who attended. A great day and fun all round. Until next year enjoy the last week on the mountain (the park is still open and running), and have an epic summer away for those who can do it.

So just over a week ago i had an operation on my elbow. Restitched tricep tendon means i cannot do a whole heap. Movies with time indoors and struggling to grip reality. However a whole lotta faith in the crew and all they are doing. Boys have it sussed. So if you can get the chance to be there for spring slush fest do it. Its a great time to get into riding the park and pushing some boundries.

After a miss diagnosis 3 times in 4 weeks i have just had surgery to re atattch my tricep muscle to my elbow. Pretty hard to miss once inspected by sufficient medical staff in Christchurch. All bets have been taken however and the local Doctor from Mt Hutt was bang on. Thanks to everyone who has looked out for me over the last few weeks and these last days. We have been putting in some new features for the slopestyle competition on Saturday. Pretty stoked to see it all coming together and it is fun as to ride. We have put in a low flat down for all your ollie on needs, launcher rail, and a spine with a tyre on the top to stall/bonk/or plant. All of these items are helping make the course longer and giving us a series of fun features in one line. More items to come.

Caught up with Baza on the way to work today. I was so stoked on his outfit as he brought back the 'real' many care to discard. It doesn't matter what you wear or ride its the fun factor involved with the shred. Baz was a mad man from Oz who was ramping up for some fresh pow we scored overnight. He told me the gear was 17 years old and he had pulled it out of his closet. I was beyond stoked to hear from this dude many prior shralp sessions from his past, and then to see him ripping it to pieces on the slopes this afternoon. Stoked!

Tonight was a late one. Home at 8.30 with a real sense of appreciation for the grooming crew and the park boys. We have had a long day and it is always hard to slave a couple more hours digging. We put in a few more and as we did the cloud burnt off and gave an almighty view south across our new items down over the jump line and into the sunset. Sounds like the start to a novel but... It was all about the features. Stoked to add 2 more items into the mini park tonight! Spread the word... Quake or no quake you can still get away from it all.

So after averadge weather conditions the crew got together and cleared snow from our locker room. We did it Terrain Park style. Clean cut steps, bench seats and a snow ledge to ride. Fun times for a slow job. Hoping for some clear weather soon.

So not quite spring on September 3rd. We got slammed with some super fast snow storm action that closed the mountain and gave the road an icy slick surface. Cars and buses were spun in, out and around. Some photos from the storm.

You know when there are a bunch of these suckers running around that spring has hit. Its a good time. Maybe the best time of season when the cold darkness subsides and gives us warm sunny days. In turn slushy goodness, perfect for the jibber inside and great for the turning tide when ice turns to slush on the jumps first thing. I love spring. Stoked its here again!

Today was another powder day. After rebuilding the park 2 - 3 times now we are yet again ready to do it once more. As we set up all around the parks the crew to some much appreciated laps through the Log Chute and bottom of the triple chair things were going sweet! then out of nowhere with a new line following Young Buck i came unstuck and received a hefty gash in the elbow. Doing the old kamakaze roll has it's benefits - saves your head. But the down side was stitches... Next time you think about dropping out of the sky make sure you have had some practice in the art of Kamakaze rolls. Great Powder today none the less. Thanks to Andy C and Mikey.

We Have rebuilt the mini park 2 times now... After the latest downfall and 200 + km/hr winds we have got 4 jibs in and will be building the jumps up during the week. So Jokes aside. We got stuck on the hill. Some could not believe that thursty Thursday was a right off so kept charging overnight as the lucky 5 people in Steelworx score an untaped bar queue and the crew hung out, slept, and helped those lucky few across the stair set to the toilets. So the mountain got around 1m of snow. Pretty sweet if you are a powder junkie. Pretty bad if you work in the park! So the crew had everything shaped up tip top through the whole line up. Now all swallowed up by the force of nature we are prepping to re dig them out and shape em up clean. Some pics from this morning before the mountain opened up.

Today was fun times. Pipe was groomed up well from Fish last night. Nice work. The efforts from Snowmaking, and grooming so sick! Fish, Blair and their teams have been on point all season. Thank You. So when the wind is howling and the snow is still good it does not mean that the resort is a write off. I mean, any chance on a day off to just ride is a great opportunity! It is days like this that sometimes bear fruit. Giving fun factor of epic proportions and all round don't care riding! Don't care riding is how it should always be. Its just empowered by the fact the park jump line has closed and the jibs are still hard to hit in the high winds. To rug up, put on the face mask and shred the teeth off the open trail or not, it is about fun! Get the most out of every opportunity and respect the fact that we have the chance to ride! So we had some Queenstown crew sessioning the slope today. Stoked! Ash man from last year, Andy Dub from last year, Jordan, and our local crew including the big sheriff Zach O. Over the last week we have been building up some features. The crew, Grooming crew, and management have been patient with conditions and the like to get things going. We are now just one day away from finishing it all to get every course on the go. It has been as up and down as last year. Sunday Night Training.

So the plan was to get on the tramps at QE2. Well sure enough someone had not checked the time on it and we rolled up to hear "Bye Bye" being said by some gay instructor who was rude to say the least. Anyone who has been will know the guy. None of the crew wanted to hang out for any length of time so we bailed quickly to the driving range for a T off. Caught up with the counter man who gave us a sly 10 free extra balls each on the 50 for $4 Sunday combo deal, grabbed a club (Iron-Lite 360), had a look at an amazing poster for inspiration and was set for a smash. Problem was even this guy had a limit too. we got 20 minutes to crank through 50 each. The range was well lit and had many cubicals. I do not regularly play golf but i love having a game every now and then. The driving range is always a good time. I think i might have just been hooked into playing more often. The crew were all done with 5 minutes to spare. A quick session, but one that has inspired many more to come. Thanks QE2. Good Times!

After another solid weekend and some great snow conditions off piste it now turns back to the Terrain park. Swallowed up whole by the storming fury of a SE snowfall we are looking up after many hours of digging and re creating. I am so stoked with the crews efforts over the last few days. Hoping soon we can get the 4 jump line pimped and back to 100% to let the good times roll! Pipe of course now is back to digging out and start cutting asap. Until tomorrow. Peace.

A massive thank you to Andrew Lyall who put in hours of work filming this edit of our parks in 2009. This guy works like a crazy person with nothing but effort towards getting it done. Over the last year he has put this together after many restraints and hassles he has powered through to come up with this. Team rider Ben comber and local ripper TJ had a session in the park with NZsnowboard.com yesterday playing their game of dice. I have not posted anything after the rail comp. There is a reason so please sight tight and wait just another day until i can give everyone some information for the coming weekend. I just didn't want to drop it yet. Although for some info to the ears... the team have been putting in several hours in the morning from 5am and into the evening till 8pm to get a couple more on the go! All Greased Up.

The first All Greased Up rail jam took place on Friday. It saw a solid turn out regardless of the bad weather. Great to see what could be thrown down to convince the peers to cast a vote. You see it was down to riders voting for riders. A fair competition that saw 13 year old Carlos Garcia Night take the winning thanks to the highest total vote score. Joe Dole in a close second. A great event where all through to the finals saw a prize. There will be another event in spring where the overall will receive a special greasy prize. Worthwhile trust me. Bolt boys bring Bolts to the shelter!

Aaron Bolt and his son Vinnie rolled into town today for a session in the shelter. Aaron has a huge history as one of the guys who held snowboarding close to heart when the fruit booting was going through the jump turn faze and was frouning on the single plank shredders. Aaron started up a shop Wide Load (RIP 93) in Christchurch that took his core snowboarding beliefs to the streets and gave those lucky enough to rent boards the chance to see what it was all about. Now days he is involved with Quest down on high street. Still bringing the board sports to the masses with the right attitude. I look up to Aaron and his views on snowboard and skateboard society. I have uploaded some pics of Vin ripping the mini. Nice work bro keep it charging!

So today was a fresh dose of Burton 2011. Sick. The crew got into some of the new "Flying V" tech and rolled into the new generation of snowboarding. We also today got our new gear from Dragon. Stoked! Thank you! Also 3 new sporks were delivered. Things are looking good, and the crew are amping to build the "All Greased Up Rail Jam" This Friday. Super undercover, come down enter at the base area and shred with your mates. Join the expression session and win some gears. One catch though. You have to vote for someone to go through to finals and no you cant vote for yourself TJ! See you there for a great chance to ride with all abilities. Good times. Last thing for today we were graced with an appearance from Indie. Indie is an all spono'd up terrior that gets to spend many days with Jay from Burton traveling the country and hangin on the snow. Real iced coffee came to the party today with free coffee for those first turns in the big park. The smooth flavor of the choc hit went down well with some dub step on the speaker at the drop in. Everyone was stoked and the crew was amping on the turnout. For the rest of the season we will be getting the features swapped in and out on a regular basis so that things keep interesting.
